For over 25 years, the Lite Brite Neon Studio team has had the pleasure of being the artist collective responsible for the production of hundreds of public and private neon and luminous works of art, displayed worldwide.
By working to illuminate the voices, stories, and ideas of artists who identify within the broad queer umbrella, such as Lola Flash, Demian DinéYazhi’, LJ Roberts, EJ Hill, and Glenn Ligon, we offer a vision of a world in the process of becoming. These transformational artworks illuminate public and private spaces and uplift the national conversation around who we are as a people. They serve as beacons of hope, transformation, and reconciliation, and expand the possibilities of art in service to the world.
For our first two decades in operation, Lite Brite Neon’s finances were dependent on producing neon works in the for-profit sector, including for tech firms, fashion shows, music videos, large-scale public events, and corporations such as Nike, Burberry, Gap, Bergdorf Goodman, and Apple.
In light of the changing world we find ourselves living in, Lite Brite Neon has developed a new working model. Moving forward, thanks to the support of our nonprofit partner Queer Art, donations from generous benefactors will allow us to expand the scope and reach of our collaborations with artists, particularly those working at the margins of society. We hope this new model will place reciprocal relationships at the center of the creation story, and enable more transfolks to lead, innovate, and invent nontraditional possibilities.
In 2017, we launched an artist edition program to support both artists and institutions dedicated to social change. This initiative has raised funds for organizations like the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art, the National Forest Foundation, Art Omi, Housing Works, and the NYC AIDS Memorial.
Our artist edition program has empowered both world renowned artists like Jeffrey Gibson and emerging artists like Alexandra Bell to have a limited edition neon work brought into the world in support of a social cause that is personally meaningful to them.
Our hope is to continue opening up the enormous power and possibility of the neon medium to the creative practices of artists who are working to transform and awaken our world. We especially appreciate when we can share this gift with emerging artists, or those struggling to find mainstream institutional funding.
